Hip osteoarthritis is caused by deterioration of articular cartilage and wear-and-tear of the hip joint. Osteoarthritis occurs most often in older people, but younger people sometimes get osteoarthritis primarily from joint injuries.
Osteoarthritis of the hip can develop from several factors, including:
previous hip injury
previous fracture, which changes hip alignment
genetics
congenital and developmental hip disease
subchondral bone that is too soft or too hard
avascular necrosis
The actual cause of osteoarthritis is unknown. Factors that might cause it include:
Being overweight
Getting older
Joint injury
Joints that are not properly formed
A genetic defect in joint cartilage
Stresses on the joints from certain jobs and playing sports.
Symptoms
The primary symptoms of hip osteoarthritis are:
pain localized to the groin area and the front or side of the thigh
morning stiffness, though for less duration than occurs with rheumatoid arthritis
limited range of motion of the hip and pain during motion.
The symptoms can worsen to the point that pain is constantly present.
