Neuromodulation: A New Medical Treatment?

Neuromodulation involves the use of an electrical or electromagnetic stimulating device that modulates, or adjusts, a specific neural pathway that is thought to be dysfunctional and thus creating a disorder or disease. The goal is to relieve symptoms by using preprogrammed stimulation patterns on the patient. Examples of neuromodulation devices include:

    • Spinal Cord Stimulators
    • Deep Brain Stimulators (DBS)
    • Functional Electrical Stimulator
    • Vagus Nerve Stimulator
    • Magnetic Stimulators
          • Transcranial Magnetic Stimulators (TMS)
          • Rapid Transcranial Magnetic Stimulator (rTMS)
          • The Resonator™ device

Pico-Tesla’s Resonator™ device uses a low-level pulsed magnetic field as a form of magnetic stimulation therapy. They’ve used this technology to conduct Clinical Studies in diseases such as Parkinson’s disease, Fibromyalgia and Alzheimer’s disease. More studies and clinical trials are currently being performed to test the results of this pulsed magnetic therapy on other disorders and diseases as well. Different than the electrical stimulators described above, the Resonator is a “non invasive” treatment that doesn’t require surgery.

    Electromagnetics

Electromagnetic Field therapy is a division of neuromodulation that has been around for centuries, but it wasn’t until 1982 that magnetic stimulation was found to have an effect on the body. Now there are many applications that use pulsed magnetic field therapy in improving improving symptoms associated with disease. A few of these treatments include:

    • Neuronetic’s Transcranial Magnetic Stimulator (TMS) that uses electro-magnetic fields for treating depression in patients unresponsive to drug therapy.
    • Ivivi Technologies Inc.’s targeted pulsed electromagnetic field (tPEMF™) therapeutic products used to calm post-operative pain in superficial soft tissue.

It looks as if neuromodulation and electromagnetics are here to stay. As a non-invasive, low-risk procedure that doesn’t require drugs, more patients are turning to these magnetic field therapies to find relief.
